Development ĭuring the development of Type 90-II/Al-Khalid (also known as MBT-2000) in the 1980s, the gearbox and engine were originally imported from Germany, but this plan was abandoned due to a Western arms embargo. Without a doubt, the ZTZ-99 is a significant step forward in Chinese armored vehicles with combat performance comparable to Western models. The VT-4 ( Chinese: VT-4主战坦克 pinyin: VT-4 zhǔzhàn tǎnkè), also known as the MBT-3000, is a Chinese third generation main battle tank built by Norinco for overseas export. In 2007, tests of the ZTZ-99A vehicle were revealed, with even better armor and – probably – an active protection system. Composite armor with elements of dynamic protection is almost certainly used. It also has a powerful 1,500 hp engine, which gives it good maneuverability and off-road capability, and finally, it has a modern SKO (fire control system) and good observation instruments. It has an effective main armament, probably inferior to only a few Western solutions. Despite the fact that more precise data about the ZTZ-99 is kept secret, it is undoubtedly the most modern tank of the Chinese army. Chinese designers set themselves the goal of creating the ZTZ-99, a machine that would be able to match Western models such as the Leopard 2A6 or the M1A1 Abrams. The ZTZ-99 was created as a successor to the Type 85 tank and a very far-reaching development of the ZTZ-98G. In addition, the tank's armament consists of 2 machine guns: caliber 12.7 mm and 7.62 mm. The machine is armed with one 125-mm ZPT-98 tank gun. ZTZ-99 is equipped with a diesel engine with a capacity of 1,500 liters. At the moment (2018), approximately 300-500 tanks of this type have been produced. The first prototypes of the machine were probably created in the mid-1990s, and serial production, which began in 2001, continues to this day.
